The Glen Retreat Bushcare Group existed for a few years about 2005. The group cared for the small bush gully between Frasers Road and Glen Retreat Road at Mitchelton. There will be no foreseeable group meetings until at least a small group of local people express interest in continuing this project.
In the gully is an intermittent creek that meanders between hills and eventually flows into Kedron Brook. Many species of birds and native wildlife are found in this attractive place.
The group co-ordinator, Josephine McKay, was trained in horticulture and safe working practices. Josephine was always on hand to identify plants or offer advice if required. The Parks team from the Brisbane City Council provides follow up maintenance and small improvements as resources allow.
There only needs to be a small group to make some positive changes to help save this precious piece of bush from being overrun by introduced weeds. Chinese Elm, Cat's Claw Creeper and Madeira vine are the main threatening weeds.
A lot of rubbish has been removed from the site in the past and the weeds had been reduced. It's fair to say that the bush was in a very precarious state before this work began - the weeds were really getting out of control - but now it's starting to look as if it may decline back to that state unless some local interest can prevent that.
With the help of the local community, " Glen Retreat " will be a beautiful place once again - a haven for birds and wildlife.
